WASHINGTON, May 22 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- What used to be the province of only very wealthy students -- a private tutor -- is now affordable for students of all backgrounds.
Georgetown Learning Centers -- an elite DC-based tutoring company -- has just launched an online tutoring service called ThinkingStorm, which links students with expert personal tutors at a fraction of the typical cost.
According to founder Annie Burnquist, "An American calculus tutor typically charges about $100 per hour. ThinkingStorm offers the same one-on- one interaction for a quarter of that price."
Having attending the prestigious Milton Academy, Burnquist has seen first- hand how students at America's most elite boarding schools use tutors to achieve success. In founding ThinkingStorm, Burnquist wanted to expand that model to less privileged students.
"This is a major coup for students whose families may not have the financial resources to afford the expensive tutoring sessions that are growing popular nationwide. Now kids from all financial backgrounds can get the personal attention they need to succeed academically."
ThinkingStorm offers tutors with high levels of expertise, including specialists with master's degrees in subjects like math and science.
"Because we're internet-based, we can keep prices down while matching a student with the tutor best qualified for his or her needs," says Burnquist.
Using an interactive, web-based "virtual chalkboard", ThinkingStorm allows for online discussions between tutor and student, virtually on-demand.
Before creating ThinkingStorm, Burnquist founded Georgetown Learning Centers, which grew rapidly, largely as result of its SAT program, which helped thousands of DC-area student raise SAT scores by an average of 150 points. Georgetown Learning Centers now has offices in Great Falls, McLean and Charlottesville, Va.
"Our founders have an understanding of what truly makes a quality education," says Burnquist. "ThinkingStorm represents the next step in sharing that philosophy and improving education for kids across the nation."
